Ce film relate les massacres perpétrés par les Nazis en Biélorussie. 3 millions de civils y sont morts. Proche de l’horreur, Klimov reste pourtant sobre, sans dramatisation macabre, sans racolage morbide. Il fait de son spectateur le simple témoin de ces atrocités avec toute l’honnêteté intellectuelle qui le caractérise. On croyait tout savoir de la violence, on n’avait encore rien vu ! On sort brisé de ce spectacle magnifique et bouleversant. Une œuvre grandiose, un film émouvant, qui nous montre les horreurs de la guerre comme jamais personne n’a osé nous la montrer.
